EVO Sharing motivates electromobility trips with in-app rewards

EVO has been a local energy supplier in Germany for over 120 years. The company is committed to finding the right balance between sustainability, security, supply, and profitability. They act on that commitment.

In 2018 the company launched EVO Sharing, a sustainable mobility initiative with the goal of bringing people closer to electromobility through scooter sharing. After a successful launch, they are now looking to cover more areas and reach new target audiences such as students across cities.

Goals

EVO Sharing had 3 main objectives:

  1. Promote electromobility in a fun and playful way.
  2. Offer incentives to increase the number of rides per person.
  3. Drive more in-app purchases by rewarding customer loyalty.

Approach

1. Gamification workshop The process started with an introductory gamification workshop exploring the business model, goals, and target audience. We discussed ideas and possibilities behind gamification: what it is, how it motivates customers. Gamification fails a lot of the time, but StriveCloud has both the technology and expertise in-house to make it work.

2. Gamification design plan Based on insights gathered during the first workshop, our team of experts created a gamification design plan. This included concrete game mechanics and recommendations that fit EVO Sharing's business goals and target audience. We worked out which in-app loyalty and gamification features to use and how to name them so they reflect EVO Sharing's brand message — from EvoCoins to level names.

We started by deciding which behaviors to reward. In EVO Sharing's case, kilometers and minutes driven. To motivate these behaviors we created EvoCoins, which users can win and exchange for free riding minutes. We added a leveling system where users progress from a rookie at level 1 up to over 20 levels based on the total kilometers driven.

3. Set up and implementation We helped EVO Sharing set up our software through the direct integration with Wunder Mobility. EVO Sharing can now design new pages and add in-app gamification and loyalty features without users ever noticing the difference.

A new page was added inside the app with a general overview of levels, achievements, EvoCoins, and progress.

4. Onboarding and customer success We trained the EVO Sharing team on how to work with the control panel and set up new achievements. They started by adding 2 features so they wouldn't overwhelm customers. After the initial launch, they can gather feedback and add more in-app loyalty and gamification features.

Highlights

Creating EvoCoins to motivate electric scooter usage EVO Sharing wanted to incentivize customers to use their electric scooters more often, so they introduced EvoCoins. Customers are rewarded with EvoCoins based on achievements such as kilometers driven or minute packages purchased. They can exchange EvoCoins for free driving minutes. As EVO Sharing grows into their gamification strategy, opportunities like timed challenges and lottery systems can be explored.

A leveling system linked to kilometers driven Customers level up as they drive more kilometers. Every customer starts as a Rookie on level 1 and can grow up to 20 levels. Progress meters visualize advancement toward the next level. A tried and proven way to keep people engaged.

A new page built inside the EVO Sharing app StriveCloud's control panel includes a CMS that allows EVO Sharing to set up and create new pages and gamification mechanics easily. EVO Sharing used this to build a central overview where users find their levels, EvoCoins, and other achievements directly in the app.
